Welcome to this Introduction to FOD and FOD Prevention. The course you are beginning is intended to introduce you to some extremely important concepts related to safety and quality assurance. Specifically, this course is going to discuss the danger of Foreign Object Debris and the importance of preventing Foreign Object Damage in your organization.
FOD
Foreign Object Debris: A substance, debris or article alien to a vehicle or system which would potentially cause damage.
Foreign Object Damage: Any damage attributed to a foreign object that can be expressed in physical or economic terms which may or may not degrade the product’s required safety and/or performance characteristics.
Manufacturing and/or maintaining aerospace or other high technology products differs from other occupations by the strict requirements for product integrity and the processes used to ensure safety and reliability. Regardless of the specific nature of your organization, be it government, military, or commercial, your participation and understanding of the topics discussed in this course are critical. At the very least, your department or company’s reputation and profitability will be impacted by your ability to prevent FOD, at most, lives may hang in the balance.
