Introduction
Turf sweepers are excellent units for maintaining clean, well-groomed lawns, golf courses, and sports fields. These units help you pick up debris, grass clippings, and leaves quickly, without as much time and labor as raking by hand. However, like other types of mechanical equipment, turf sweepers can encounter issues eventually. Knowing common issues and how to fix them will help you get the most out of your machine for years to come, keeping it performing at its high level, regardless of your level of expertise.
1. Collection Efficiency
The most common complaint by turf sweeper manufacturers is when they notice their turf sweeper isn’t collecting as efficiently or effectively. This could be any of the following: worn brushes, improper brush height, or a full hopper.
Fix: You should routinely check your turf sweeper brushes for wear and replace them when the bristles wear too short and frayed. You should also make the appropriate adjustments so that the brushes are in light contact with the ground. It’s always a precaution to empty the hopper before it gets full so that your turf sweeper doesn’t clog up when it is dirty.
2. Clogged or Jammed Brushes
If your turf sweeper abruptly ceases to collect debris or produces grinding noises, debris may be trapped between the brushes or in the housing.
Fix: First, turn off the equipment to check for blockages. Then use a stick or brush to clear debris such as downed twigs, leaves, or mud that has become lodged. Cleaning the brushes after each use will minimize jams and improve operation.
3. An Uneven Cleaning Pattern
Every once in a while, after sweeping, you will notice one side of the turf looks cleaner than the other side. This usually means uneven wear on the brushes or that the wheels are not aligned appropriately.
Fix: Inspect the brushes on both sides of the sweeper. If one brush is worn or more worn than the other, then you will have to replace the brush or rotate each of the brushes. You should also ensure that the tires are aligned and that each tire has equal air pressure if you have a tow-behind model. If all three tires contact the same level of ground, this will improve the consistency of the cleaning operation.
4. Belt or Chain Slippage.
If you own a powered turf sweeper, the belt or chain drive can loosen over time, which affects the speed of the brushes and can cause jerky movement.
Fix: Consult the manufacturer’s instructions to properly tension the belt or chain. If the belt is cracked or stretched, you will need to replace it. Regularly lubricating moving parts will also provide for more consistent operation and less jerky operation.
5. Reduced Suction or Airflow
In specific models, especially vacuum-assisted cleaners, less suction means no pickup. This is usually due to clogged filters or air ducts.
Fix: Clean or swap air filters as necessary, and check ducts for blockages. Verify that seals are tight and that suction is maintained.
6. Rust and corrosion
For outdoor use, sweepers are prone to moisture, which will result in rust on metal parts.
Fix: Clean and dry the sweeper completely after each use. Store the sweeper inside and covered, in a dry area. Proactive protection on exposed metal parts can make a significant difference as well, such as applying a spray-on protective coating or oil and regularly inspecting.
