When possible, store your consumable items – such as hardware and building materials – outside of a FOD area. Transport such items into the work area only when needed.
Keep an inventory of all consumables entering the area and whether or not they were consumed or installed. If the item is impossible to inventory, such as large bags of nails, estimate consumption by weight, volume or otherwise, as best you can.
Small things can hide under large things. Try not to store tools and small parts together, unless the parts are secured in their own dedicated sub-compartments. Label each compartment for a specific part or set of parts, for a neat and clean storage system.
