These are several of the key terms and definitions that workers must be familiar with in your manufacturing environment.
FO (Foreign Objects) — Any alien substance or article that can invade a product during the production process.
FOD (Foreign Object Debris) — A substance, debris or article alien to a vehicle or system that has invaded the product and could cause damage.
FOD (Foreign Object Damage) — Any damage or incident attributed to a foreign object that can be expressed in physical or economic terms which may or may not degrade the product’s required safety and/or performance characteristics.
FOE (Foreign Object Elimination) — A process, program or procedure by which FOD or the threat of FOD is eliminated from a facility, product or system.
FOD Program — All policies, instructions, and procedures carried out within an organization to prevent foreign object damage to equipment, products, and personnel.
FOD Inspection — The physical inspection and removal of Foreign Object Debris from a FOD Sensitive Area. Usually conducted as part of a FOD Audit.
FOD Sensitive Area — Any work area where foreign objects could potentially cause a system or product failure due to deterioration, malfunction or damage. Criticality is indicated by the designations (in descending order); (1) FOD Critical Area; (2) FOD Control Area; and (3) FOD Awareness Area.
