Environmental FOD

Because humans are not producing it, environmental FOD – such as sand, leaves, twigs, and even animals or birds (called “Wildlife FOD”) – can sneak up on you unawares, especially if you build products outdoors or in an assembly area with large open-air entrances. Even closed indoor facilities are subject to environmental FOD. For instance, a drafty hallway or a visitor's dirty shoe soles will bring unwanted particles into the workplace.

Take a pro-active stance to prevent environmental FOD from reaching your work area. Make sure that doors and windows that are supposed to be closed stay closed. If you have indoor high rafters, look up and listen for birds and nests. Wear clean clothing to work and clean or cover your footwear when appropriate. Take extra precautions on rainy or windy days.

If you see wild animals, do not approach them yourself. Even small rodents can bite and scratch untrained individuals, plus there may be laws or regulations prohibiting you from harming them. Instead, report them to your supervisor so that experts can deal with the problem quickly and efficiently.

Nesting Barriers
Barriers placed in the rafters can prevent birds from making a nest.
