Condition

As with tools, handle parts and supplies carefully. Confirm that a part, no matter how small, is clean and free of FOD, before you install it or after you uninstall it. Clean and inspect any item that may have been cut, sliced, welded, sanded, soldered or otherwise altered in such as way as to potentially create FOD.

Avoid contaminating parts and equipment with residue from other work that you perform. Welding, pouring liquids, scraping wires and many other routine manufacturing activities can produce splatter, shards, dust or other minuscule contaminants. Before performing these activities, cover or remove from the work area any items that should not become contaminated.

Depending upon the nature of the part, rough handling might cause smaller component parts to break off and become FOD. Avoid rough handling, but if you must, then afterwards inspect the item to confirm that everything is in place and in good condition.
